It seems as if the food gets more gourmet, the movies more sensual, the
nightclubs more exotic, the outdoor adventures more extreme and the
weekend getaways more glamorous. Is much of today’s entertainment no
more than fleeting pleasure? At times entertainment appears to be about
surpassing the Jones’ [forget keeping up with them] than about the
entertainment itself ~ think back on the last time you went site
seeing, there were probably more cameras than visitors, each grappling
to capture the moment for show–and-tell at the office on Monday.
Frequently we equate entertainment with flash, expense, and fanfare.
The more our senses are titillated the better. In short more seems to
be better. But is it?
Couples who are together for the long haul, who consider themselves
soul mates seem to share a common form of satisfying entertainment, a
most overlooked, no cost, not advertised or reported entertainment…
Sitting on the couch or laying in the bed talking, yup, just talking.
No, this is not a time for problem solving or decision making, but
sharing. Sharing ideas about life, dreams for the future, basic
philosophical beliefs, embarrassing moments, childhood memories,
favorite poems, and the simple, beautiful ordinary things life is made
of.
Now, there are a few guidelines. For this to become mutually gratifying
a level of trust must be present, this sharing cannot be a monolog and
you should have some common core values. The best by product of such
entertainment is bonding, enhanced closeness, greater understanding,
and increased affection for both parties. So, the next time you and
your beloved are in need of some entertainment give sitting and just
talking on your favorite couch or park bench a whirl. About the author Relationship Expert and former Marriage, Family, Group & Individual Therapist. For more information check www.stratateam.com
